senator harry reid and the democrats in the senate can make folks like blunt have to vote on gun control. they can make them have to vote on universal background checks. that gets harder in the house, although once the senate does pass something, if it does pass something, it is it get hard for the house to simply ignore it. so more so i think than even president obama's national speeches can force attention on this so they can, the way they're actually going to make -- the way that democrats can actually make republicans have to make a yes or no decision on gun control itself is to bring it to the floor of the senate and force them to actually vote yes or no. >> let's take a look at the money in the background of all of this. your colleague, chris solicited how the nra spent $32 million in the 2012 campaign and only spent $1 million in direct contributions, spent $25 million on outside spending, which includes political campaign ads. and the remaining $6 million on federal lobbying. can gun control lobbists like the former congresswoman, gabby giffords and her husband, started their own

no, harry reid is not a more powerful guy. but i do agree in the end, if the president will stop demagoguing, and if he'll stop running a presidential campaign, a permanent campaign that david brooks is talking about, al, i think you're right. i think the president, at the end, may actually make some decisions that will upset his own base, change cpi, on hopefully -- hopefully he won't take paul krugman's position and say we'll worry about medicare in 2025 when it starts to melt down. hopefully he'll be a little more responsible than that. i think he will. >> yes. >> but the problem, i think, goes back to mika's point. in all of the attacking the president, he has a plan on the table. you can say is demagoguing. the revenues that he's putting on the table from the taxes add up. the republicans have just come back saying, we're not putting revenue on the table, but they have not come up with a counterproposal. they haven't even shown up. the problem with the david brooks problem is the sequence of events. we set up sequestratio

that could be if senator harry reid's argument -- that is essentially dead on arrival anyway. >> if diane feinstein doesn't have the assault weapons at least let her have an opportunity to offer this amendment. >> will you vote for it? >> i don't know, frankly -- and she knows i didn't read her amendment. i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense, but i'll take a look at it. >> joining me now to take a look at it. editor for the new republic, good to see you, my friend. >> thanks for having me on the show, ezra. >> so that didn't sound enormously encouraging from harry reid, kind of sounded like the assault weapons ban will get a bit of a pro forma vote and that is about it. >> i think everybody knew going into the fight the different elements of the gun legislation agenda, that the assault weapons ban would be one that had the hardest road ahead. in part because you know you still need 60 votes to pass anything in the senate. and in part because the republicans control the house. and in part because the gun lobby has made this a very hard vote to have.
